From Bill to Impact: How NCTIES Members Can Influence Policy.
The NCTIES Advocacy Committee is committed to keeping you informed about legislation introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly that could impact educational technology, school libraries, and other education-related areas important to our members. As the Long Session continues, new bills are posted frequently—sometimes daily. But once you’re aware of a bill, what can you do with that information?
As bills are added to ncleg.gov, we do our best to share them with you promptly. When a bill resonates with you—whether you support it or have concerns—consider taking action by reaching out to your local House and Senate representatives. In your message, be sure to include:
Personal stories about how the bill could affect your work or the students and families you serve.
Local impact, including any anticipated consequences for your school, district, or community.
Supporting data or research that adds weight to your position.
An invitation to connect, either in person or virtually, to discuss the issue further.
A willingness to help, whether by answering questions, conducting additional research, or hosting them for a school visit.
When contacting legislators, try to avoid:
Form letters. Personalized messages are far more effective than identical ones sent by many.
Criticism or confrontation. Instead of attacking a bill or a legislator’s beliefs, offer constructive feedback or suggest improvements, keeping the focus on how the proposal affects your students and community.
Your voice matters. Advocacy starts with awareness—but it grows through action.
